Hennepin County sheriff Dawanna Witt has filed paperwork to run for a second term.

She made the announcement Tuesday during the Adam and Jordana Show on WCCO.

"I kind of like the sheriff thing, so I'm going to stick with it," Witt said, noting that she's been asked to seek higher office.

"I was asked to run for governor, and there's, let's say another municipality where I was asked if I would consider putting my name in the hat," she said.

The sheriff made her intentions for another term known in a social media post six months ago. Witt was elected sheriff in 2022, defeating Joseph Banks in the election by a comfortable margin.

She is the first woman and person of color to hold the office.

"I'm not done being a cop yet," Witt said.
