After a relatively mild start to the 2021 winter season, snow came back with a vengeance over the weekend as some northern Minnesota residents welcomed more than a foot of snow.

In some areas of northern Minnesota, like Grand Marais, Minnesotans got more than 17 inches, leaving many digging themselves out.

The co-owner of Lake Superior Trading Post, Eric Humphery, told News Talk 830 WCCO's Susie Jones that the snow started early and continued throughout the day.

"It started maybe at 9 or 10 a.m. [Sunday] in Grand Marais," Humphrey said. "Started out pretty thick, and it was real thick all through the day. We actually ended up closing early."

Humphrey continued saying that it was "the quietest it's been in a long time" after the storm.

Minnesotans took to social media to share their reactions to the snow returning to the state, and one animal was seen having the time of its life in Grand Marais.

The snow is a drastic change for the region that saw massive forest fire destruction over the summer after a record year for drought in the state.

Still, winter is here just a week after temperatures were in the high 40s throughout the metro area. However, you wouldn't be able to tell that now with temperatures dropping and winds adding to the cold.

"It's probably a couple degrees above zero up here, and the wind is really strong, as strong as it gets up here, it's whipping," Humphrey said. "The wind chill is tens of degrees below zero, I'm sure."

Wind gusts clocked in around 66 miles per hour in the region, causing power outages and the closing of schools along Lake Superior's north and south shores.

Even still, with the snow comes new activities, and Humphrey encouraged fans of cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and other outdoor activities to make their way north as they "have lots and lots of snow."
