St. Paul Police say an off-duty officer is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol when they allegedly crashed their car into a building that started a fire early Thursday morning.

St. Paul Police say an off-duty officer is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol when they allegedly crashed their car into a building that started a fire early Thursday morning.

It happened just after midnight on the 700 block of East Third Street near the Dayton's Bluff area of St. Paul.


Responding officers found the car had struck a vacant building and started the blaze.

Investigators identified the driver as a 30-year old off-duty officer from the department.

The State Patrol is handling the investigation. No charges have yet been filed. St. Paul Police Chief Axel Henry calls the incident "deeply concerning" and that the incident does not reflect or align with the values of the department or the expectations they have of each other or the people they serve.
