Some members of the St. Paul Police Department say it is one of most unusual cases they've ever had. Police are trying to find out why a man killed another man while the two were inside a car on Interstate 94 Thursday afternoon.

Nathan Wondra, 32, of St. Paul was booked into the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of Second Degree Murder.

Authorities say the two men knew each other, and the man who was arrested was a passenger in the car.

"Where a man self-reported that he had assaulted an elderly male in a vehicle," says St. Paul Police Sergeant Mike Ernster. "We're trying to determine what led to that assault and why it happened. It is very unusual. It has some pieces to it that in my 30 years I have not seen."

The incident happened near Prior Avenue where a car was stopped on the highway shoulder. The victim reportedly was older than 65. The name of the victim has not been released.

This investigation is still ongoing and police will refer the case to the Ramsey County Attorney’s office for charging consideration.

There are now 16 reported homicides in St. Paul in 2024.
