Snowplows are set to move out this week through St. Paul residential streets in a citywide effort to clear existing snow on the roads and avoid a potential one-sided parking ban.

This comes after that massive storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow in much of the metro area, leaving many side streets unpassable.

"We've been working literally non-stop since the snow on January 4th," said Public Works Director Sean Kershaw. "This was the 14th-deepest snow we have ever received and the fourth-heaviest by weight. This is an unusual situation so we do want to clean it up, in part to avoid a one-sided parking ban."

The last time St. Paul enacted such a ban was 2018, Kershaw said.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, residents of St. Paul must move their vehicles off of specific sides of east-west residential streets.

On Thursday and Friday, north-south streets will be plowed.

Those vehicles that are not moved are subject to getting towed, however the Public Works and Police departments will be focused particularly on vehicles that have been abandoned since the last snow emergency or that have not been moved in the last 48 hours.

"That's where it's a little different than a snow emergency. In a snow emergency, if you haven't moved that day you could be ticketed and towed," Kershaw said. "As long as a car hasn't been there longer than 48 hours it won't be ticketed and towed. We really just want people to work together and work with their neighbors to get the cars off whatever side we're plowing on so we can get as close to the curb as we can."

Here is the plowing schedule:

Tuesday, January 17 – City crews will plow the NORTH SIDE (typically the ODD-numbered) of east-west residential streets between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.

St. Paul residents, businesses, and visitors should move all cars off the NORTH SIDE or the odd-numbered side of east-west residential streets. People can park vehicles on the south side, or even-numbered side of the street or on any north-south residential streets or arterial (main) streets. If possible, please try to move any vehicles from residential handicap parking areas to allow crews to plow to the curb. Follow all posted “No Parking” signs.

Wednesday, January 18 – City crews will plow the SOUTH SIDE (typically the EVEN-numbered) of east-west residential streets between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.

St. Paul residents, businesses, and visitors should move all cars off the SOUTH SIDE or the EVEN-numbered side of the east-west streets. People can park vehicles on the north side, or odd-numbered side of the street or on any north-south residential streets or arterial (main) streets. If possible, please try to move any vehicles from residential handicap parking areas to allow crews to plow to the curb. Follow all posted “No Parking” signs.

Thursday, January 19 – City crews will plow the EAST SIDE (typically the EVEN-numbered) of north-south residential streets between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.

People can park vehicles on the west side, or odd-numbered side of the street or on any east-west residential streets or arterial (main) streets. Friday, January 20 – City crews will plow the WEST SIDE (typically the ODD-numbered) of north-south residential streets between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
