Still no decision made on a future site for the Minneapolis Police Department Third Police Precinct building.

A Minneapolis City Council Committee on Tuesday tried and failed to agree on moving forward with the mayor's latest proposal for a site on the 2600 block of Minnehaha Avenue South. In a vote Tuesday, the council was deadlocked 6-6.

The site will have another chance of passage on Thursday when the full council takes up the measure.

The council has been paralyzed with inaction for months over a new site after the former building was torched during the unrest following the police murder of George Floyd in 2020 and has been left empty and cordoned off ever since.

Last week in a letter to the City Council, Mayor Jacob Frey says the building at 2633 Minnehaha Avenue is being sold by its owner, and the city should purchase it. That location has the lowest cost associated with it of any of the previous proposals according to Frey.

I've offered to give cover to the council, and just make the decision myself and take the heat," says Frey. "Or the credit, whatever comes with it. We're at the point now where it's time. It's time to bring the saga to a close. We've got a place that's just right."

All council seats are on the ballot for next week's Election.
