Investigators are trying to find out what led to the shooting death of a teenager Sunday night in north Minneapolis.

It happened just before 11:00 p.m. on Russell Avenue near 29th Avenue when a single shot was fired in the basement of a house.

A birthday party reportedly was taking place there among a group of teenaged boys, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara.

"As a father myself, I cannot imagine what it would be like to go through a crime of violence to your child like this," O'Hara said. "And we are working to determine exactly the circumstances of what occurred."

Police say the original call was for a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but they later learned the victim may have been shot by someone else.

One boy is in custody as a person of interest.
