The mayor and city council in Bloomington are taking heat over a flag.
The "Thin Blue Line" police support flag flew over city hall earlier this month during National Police Week. But activist groups complained about the symbolism, saying many view the flag as a symbol of oppression.
Bloomington Mayor Tim Busse says that was absolutely not the intention of flying the flag.
"I firmly believe that the Bloomington Police Department made the request to fly the flag in an honorable and solemn and respectful manner," Busse said in a video message to residents. "I don't believe for one second that there was a racist, or threatening, or insulting intent."
Still, Busse says he understands how some people have a negative reaction to the flag, especially how it was used by white supremacists and people he called "traitors" who stormed the US Capitol in January.
Busse says the city council will have a more broad discussion next year before National Police Week.
