Volunteers on Friday are busy setting up the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Animal Human Society, their "Walk for Animals."
It's so big they're having the walk for animals at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Pet owners can walk their fur babies on a one-mile loop as many times as they want, making donations, and visiting a vast number of presentations and merchandise sales.
"You don't have to pay to register, anybody can come out and just walk with us, and we have people who have dogs, cats, I've seen chickens here, horses, ferrets in backpacks, rabbits," the Humane Society's Brittany Bauman explains. "It's for all animal lovers. You don't have to have adopted from us."
Bauman says they've already raised nearly $5 million this year for pet care. Up to 10,000 are expected for the walk, but that number may grow because of the sunny and warm forecast expected all weekend.
"This community is filled with animal lovers," Bauman says. "I mean, I think people all across the Twin Cities, they see their pets as family. And they really are looking for events where they can come and hang out with their pets, their dogs, especially their cats, their rabbits, and we just have a ton of support out in the community. Which is great because we can't do the work that we do without the generosity of this community."
This is the 54th year the Animal Humane Society has held their dog walk. You can register and get more information here.
