Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Monday nominated Hennepin County chief judge Toddrick Barnette as the city's Community Safety Commissioner.

Barnette would replace Cedric Alexander in that spot that was created earlier this year.

Alexander stepped down from the position less than a year after his appointment.

Barnette has been on the bench in Hennepin County since 2006.

He was selected as chief judge in 2020 following the retirement of Ivy Bernhardson.

Barnette had worked in the Hennepin County attorney's office for two years, and was senior attorney in the pubic defender's office.

He's a graduate of George Washington University and received his law degree from the University of Minnesota in 1992.
