
Police are encouraging local Hyundai and Kia owners to take advantage of free clinics in the Twin Cities over the next few days to help cut down on theft.
The car makers are providing free security upgrades to its vehicles in response to a growing number of car thefts.
The clinics are Friday and Saturday at the old Kmart site on Lake street in Minneapolis, and at Allianz Field in St. Paul Sunday and Monday.
as well as Friday through Sunday at Canterbury Park in Shakopee.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said they have found in most cases, the thefts involves young people.
"A 12-year-old boy was shot two different times in one of these vehicle," O'Hara said. "In between, (he) was running from the Hennepin County sheriff's office, fleeing them, in one of these stolen cars. So, look, it is a real concern."
Hyundai spokesperson Dave VandeLinde issued an apology to car owners who had their vehicle stolen.
"We're certainly sorry for the inconvenience. We realize this may be difficult for some of our customers to visit over 830 Hyundi dealers we have across the country," he said. "That's why we're offering these free clinics nationwide."
