A toddler from Southern Minnesota is clinging to life after being accidentally shot by another child in a car.
It happened on Sunday about 10:30 a.m. Martin County Sheriff's Captain Corey Klanderud says they got a 911 call from someone in a car reporting an accidental shooting.
"It is believed that a four-year old child in the back seat gained possession of the loaded firearm and accidentally discharged the firearm striking the two-year old child who was also in the back seat of the vehicle," Klanderud tells WCCO Radio.
Klanderud says they were able to meet the car on the road heading into Fairmont for medical care. The two-year old was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Rochester in critical condition.
"This is one of the worst situations we can ever experience in law enforcement, so our heart goes out to the family, and also to our employees who had to assist in this situation," explained Klanderud.
It is also not clear whether criminal charges will be filed against the owner of the gun or adults in the vehicle.
