A friendly reminder for those of you who use the Third Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis

The bridge which connects Central Avenue southeast with downtown Minneapolis closes today for repairs. MinDOT officials say the century-old bridge is deteriorating.

The span opened in 1918 and will remain closed for two years for its first major renovation in four years.

Drivers should use the Hennepin Avenue bridge instead.

Known to some as the Central Avenue Bridge, it connects downtown Minneapolis to Northeast and Saint Anthony Main.

Crews have been prepping the bridge since May and the heavy construction work is now ready to begin.

The project costs $130 million for the 2,200-foot span, and it preserves the bridge's distinctive railings and arches.
