Chauvin trial: Use of force expert finishes testimony

Derek Chauvin's defense attorney raising questions about neck restraints

Derek Chauvin's defense attorney Eric Nelson is cross-examining Los Angeles Police Sergeant Jody Stiger, a police use-of-force expert.

Nelson's line of questioning seemed to be trying to get at Chauvin's state of mind, and what he knew about the situation when he arrived at the scene outside Cup Foods on May 25th, 2020.

"A reasonable officer who comes on scene, based on all the information that he has, at that particular time, comes into the scene, sees two other police officers struggling with an actively resisting person, it's reasonable for that officer assist his fellow officers in their efforts.  Right?"

"Correct," Stiger said.

Nelson said the people gathered on the curb near the scene were also factors in Chauvin's ability to focus.  A point he made with another line of questioning.

"Just in the immediate wingspan, that can be very chaotic, right?  People can be talking to each other, talking over each other? The suspect may be saying some things? The bystanders may be saying some things," Nelson asked, to which Stiger agreed.

"In the chaos it's easy to miss some things, right?" Nelson asked.

"In certain instances, yes." Stiger replied.
