The St. Paul Police Department has issued a statement in regards to the warrant in question in the Amir Locke shooting.
In a statement, St. Paul Police says it asked Minneapolis Police to carry out three search warrants at the Bolero Flats apartment complex in relation to a homicide investigation. St. Paul Police says “it is common practice for neighboring departments to assist other departments with executing search warrants.”
However, the statement from St. Paul Police goes on to say that the agency which carries out the search warrants determines what tactics will be used.
St. Paul Police says the warrants filed in the homicide case are under seal until a judge decides otherwise. No arrests have been made in the case.
Meanwhile, Governor Tim Walz Friday has issued an Executive Order authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to provide public safety assistance.
The Governor’s action comes after the request of the City of Saint Paul for state assistance related to the federal civil rights trial of the three former Minneapolis police officers involved in the death of George Floyd. This order also means that the National Guard will be prepared should Minneapolis request additional public safety support following the death of Amir Locke.
“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of Minnesotans, and at the request of the City of Saint Paul, I have authorized the Minnesota National Guard to make preparations to assist local law enforcement agencies as needed,” said Governor Walz. “The National Guard will be available to help keep the peace, ensure public safety, and allow for peaceful demonstrations.”
