Gov Walz is taking a break from his official duties on Monday for some preventative health care.

In a letter sent to House Speaker Melissa Hortman and Senate president Bobby Joe Champion, Walz said he was transferring the power of his office to Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan while he undergoes a colonoscopy.

This follows state law, and is the second time Walz has transferred power prior to undergoing a medical procedure.

The transfer takes effect at 1:00 p.m. Monday, and reverts back to Walz following the procedure.

He's expected back on the job Tuesday.

“Preventive care screenings are critical tools to help detect, prevent, and treat disease,” said Gov. Walz in a statement. “I hope my procedure serves as a reminder and encouragement for Minnesotans to seek out preventative care and stay on top of your health.”

This is the second time Walz has briefly transferred power to his second-in-command while undergoing a medical procedure.

It happened before in 2019 when the governor had knee surgery.
