A warning from the Minnesota Department of Health after a multi-state outbreak of infant botulism.
So far, there have been 13 infants with suspected or confirmed cases of infant botulism in 10 states including one in Minnesota.
Senior state epidemiologist Maria Bye says the company has recalled the product.
"We're hoping that we can alert Minnesotans that if they have any of these specific lots of the formula that they can toss it out or bring it back to the store that they purchased it from," says Bye.
She says infant botulism is rare but serious when an infant swallows the spoors of a certain kind of bacteria .
"That bacteria can stay in the infant's large intestines and produce a toxin that then attacks the child's nerves," Bye explains.
The formula company called By the Heart Whole Nutrition has recalled the product, but they want to make sure that people check to see if they still have any at home.
"Infant botulism is a rare but serious illness that occurs when an infant swallows the spores of a bacteria that's called Clostridium botulinum," Bye adds.
She says if an infant has consumed By Heart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula they could start to have symptoms of breathing difficulties , muscle paralysis, and even death.
The FDA reported that 83 cases of infant botulism have been found nationwide since August.
It's unknown how the botulism made its way into the formula, but the company announced the recall applies to ByHeart infant formula with the batch codes 251261P2 and 251131P2, with the use-by date Dec. 1, 2026. This information can be found on the bottom of the can.
