Fire and water department crews remain on the scene of a major water main break in southwest Minneapolis.

The call came in around 3:30 Thursday morning at the two-story building at 50th and Penn.

When fire crews arrived, they found water gushing out of the first floor, including at Terzo, an Italian restaurant. Sparrow Café and Paperback Exchange Bookstore were also heavily damaged.

Three people who live in upstairs apartment units were evacuated safely.

Water continued to pour out of the build for hours, flooding nearby streets and neighborhoods with up to three feet of water in some alleyways. Nearby residents were warned to move their vehicles off of flooded roadways for fear of them freezing to the street. Temperatures and wind chills remained well below zero early Thursday morning.

According to reports, the water appears to have been shut off around 7:30 a.m.

Road crews have put down sand on the ice that formed, as it's too cold for many of the chemicals they usually use to melt ice including salt.
