WCCO has won a prestigious National Edward R. Murrow Award for continuing coverage of the tragic Annunciation mass shooting in August of last year.
A deadly mass shooting in south Minneapolis at Annunciation Church near 54th Street and Bryant Ave. in south Minneapolis on August 27, 2025, killed two kids and injured many others in a shocking, brutal attack during a Catholic mass, which also happened to be the first day of school.
The incident plunged the quiet residential area into grief and fear, prompting an outpouring of condolences and concern from city officials and local leaders. As the parish grappled with the aftermath of an unthinkable act of violence committed within their place of worship, children like 12-year old Sophia Forchas struggled for her life, and city/state lawmakers fought for ways to prevent further outbreaks of violence.
WCCO was there from the first reports of the incident, calls for gun reform in the state, reaction of lawmakers, a call for a special session from the governor, and through the release of Forchas from the hospital, something doctors said was nothing short of a miracle.
The Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala takes place on Oct. 12 at Gotham Hall in New York City. WCCO was last a recipient of a National Murrow Award in 2022 for coverage of the Daunte Wright shooting and protests in Brooklyn Center, and Best Newscast.
The Edward R. Murrow Awards honor "outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism and recognize work that informs communities, holds power accountable and exemplifies excellence in the profession." Winners come from Network Television, Network Radio, Large Market Television, Large Market Radio, Small Market Television, Small Market Radio, Large Digital Organization, Small Digital Organization, and Student categories.
