What is open and closed on Thanksgiving Day 2024?

It used to be a thing. You wrap up Thanksgiving dinner, then get in the car for some Thanksgiving Day shopping. But, in the last few years, most stores have called it quits as shoppers move online, and to give employees a break over the holiday.

So what's open and what's closed this year on Thanksgiving? Here's what we know:

General Info

Post offices: Closed. No regular mail service.

Banks: All Bremer, Huntington, Wells Fargo and U.S. Bank branches will be closed.

Malls: Most major malls in the Twin Cities are closed including the Mall of America, Ridgedale, Southdale and Rosedale.

Parking meters: Meters will not be enforced in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The University of Minnesota will enforce meters unless noted on the meter. Minneapolis parks will enforce meters unless noted on the meter.

Libraries: Libraries will be closed.

Mass Transit: Metro Transit buses and Metro Blue and Green light rail lines will follow Sunday/holiday schedules.

Schools: Public schools and the University of Minnesota will be closed.

Public agencies: Local, state and federal offices will be closed.

Open

Big Lots - Store-wide deals will be available from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Cub Foods - Most stores will be open limited hours on Thanksgiving Day from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. but check with your store for exact details.

CVS - Most CVS stores are closed on Thanksgiving Day, but the pharmacy says some remain open. Check with your local store.

Walgreens - Walgreens will again close most stores on Thanksgiving, but 24-hour locations will remain open "to meet customer and patient healthcare needs."

Starbucks - You can still get caffeine. Most Starbucks stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day 2024, but hours can vary. Some may close early or have shorter hours.

Dollar General​ - Most stores will be open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. but check for your local store's hours.

Cabela's - Cabela’s will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

Gas stations - Fret not. If you're hitting the road, you can still get gas and snacks at almost all of the major gas stations are open.

Closed

Target - The Minneapolis-based Target was one of the first big-box retailers to close on Thanksgiving in 2020 and will follow suit in 2024 for the fifth year in a row.

Walmart - While this big-box retailer has been known in the past for its insanely large shopping crowds on Thanksgiving, Walmart will be closed on Thanksgiving Day again in 2024. Sam's Club stores are also closed.

Best Buy  - Richfield-based Best Buy has stated that they will close up shop on Thanksgiving.

Kohl's - Kohl’s will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Lowe's - Lowe’s is following the footsteps of other retailers and is closed on Thanksgiving.

JCPenney - To show their employees some love this holiday, JCPenney has decided to close on Thanksgiving Day, but they'll be open at 5 a.m. on Black Friday!

Macy's- Macy’s stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day for family and friends to spend time with loved ones.

Home Depot - Home Depot announced its long-standing tradition and will continue to close all its stores on Thanksgiving Day 2024.

Costco - Following previous years, Costco will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Aldi - If you're missing last-minute ingredients Aldi can't help. They'll be closed.

Barnes & Noble - Most Barnes & Noble stores are closed on Thanksgiving and other major holidays.

Menards - Following the traditions of Thanksgiving past, Menards will close their doors for the holiday.

Trader Joe's - No last-minute snacks. Trader Joe’s will be closed.

Nordstrom - Like previous years, Nordstrom will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Ikea - The popular Swedish build-it-yourself furniture store will be closed on Thanksgiving.
