Minnesotans that worked during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic will finally get their chance to apply for a bonus check starting Wednesday morning.

The state's portal to apply for hero pay opens for 45 days at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, with an estimated 667,000 workers expected to receive $750 checks.

Governor Tim Walz is urging people to apply, but adds there's no rush.

"It's 45 days and you can sign-up any time in those 45 days," Walz said. "If we learned anything from the the Minnesota Licensing and Registration System it's that every Minnesotans will sign-up at 8 a.m. on Wednesday."

State lawmakers approved $500 million in April to fund the hero pay requests.

Checks won't exceed $1,500 and the money will be split once the 45 day window closes. People who aren't approved to receive a check will have two weeks to file an appeal.
