Frustrating. That’s Minnesota Twins president Dave St. Peter’s assessment of the first half of the season as the team sits one game below .500 at the all-star break.
St. Peter joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Vineeta Sawkar on the Morning News today, sharing that a coaching change wouldn’t correct the offensive woes the team has had.
“I can just assure folks that every aspect of our approach is being looked at, and there have been several adjustments already made,” St. Peter said. “It’s ultimately going to be on our players, and particularly our best players, to perform. Our stars need to be stars.”
St. Peter said he’s optimistic that the injured Jorge Polanco, whose bat the Twins have desperately missed throughout much of the first half of the season, will be back in the starting line-up soon.
“The good news is that he’ll start a rehab assignment later this week and be back in our line-up, sooner versus later,” St. Peter said. “That’s a good thing, and I’m optimistic he’s going to play a huge role in leading the way here over the course of the second half.”
The Twins are a half-game behind Cleveland for first in the AL Central. They’ll be back on the diamond Friday for a weekend road series in Oakland.
When it comes to the impending trade deadline, St. Peter said that if history repeats itself, the Twins will most likely make a move to help gear up for a return to the postseason. But he also says he isn’t expecting it to be a buyer’s market.
“I think that the reality of it is, there are a lot of teams within shouting distance of the postseason,” St. Peter said. “So that limits probably the trade market to some extent, particularly this time in the month. But later in the month, that can sort itself out, and I expect it will. I’m fairly optimistic you’ll see us make a move or two.”
