Authorities in southern Malawi shared that 17 people are missing, and seven people, including a 1-year-old, are dead after a hippopotamus charged into and capsized a canoe on a river in the country.

The Nsanje District Police Commissioner, Dominic Mwandira, shared that police were able to rescue 13 of the 37 people who were aboard the long wooden canoe traversing the Shire River on Monday.

The canoe was taking the group to the neighboring country of Mozambique when it encountered the animal, leaving the watercraft capsized.

The World Food Program and Malawian police have been working to find those who were aboard the canoe, but a police spokesperson, Agnes Zalakoma, shared that those missing are feared dead.

Still, the search for the missing passengers continues.

“The search mission to locate the missing individuals is currently underway,” Zalakoma said.
