It's time to check your freezer! A massive nationwide recall has been issued for frozen burritos that could possibly be contaminated with listeria, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.
Don Miguel Foods -- a company that produces frozen burritos, breakfast burritos, mini tacos, and other frozen Mexican foods -- is recalling more than 10,000 pounds of its carne asada burritos.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, laboratory testing showed that the burritos may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The potentially contaminated burritos were all produced on September 27, and were sold at Kroger and Walmart, among other retail and convenience stores.
The recalled burritos all have the date code D23270 printed on the package and the establishment number "EST. 20049" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, FSIS said. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause listeriosis -- a serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.
