A boy in New Zealand suddenly dropped dead after having huffed fumes from a deodorant.
The boy, 12, was seen by an adult abusing the common household item for its inhalant properties outside of a shopping center and verbally reprimanded, according to a coroner’s office spokesperson.
After being chastised, the boy then took off on foot and started to run across a nearby road while still huffing from the aerosol can when he suddenly collapsed.
“Members of the public and ambulance staff tried to help him, but he could not be revived,” the spokeswoman told the press.
The boy’s identity was not revealed by authorities.
Recent numbers from NIDA’s Monitoring the Future show that 21.7 million Americans above the age of 12 have tried inhalants at least once.
