A 16-year-old girl has died and another is critically injured after a sledding accident Sunday afternoon in Frisco, Texas, the Police Department confirmed.

The incident happened just before 2:30 p.m. in a residential neighborhood near Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court amid icy conditions following a rare winter storm in the Lonestar State.

Frisco police say a 16-year-old boy was driving a Jeep Wrangler that was pulling two 16-year-old girls on a sled when the rig struck a curb and the sled collided with a tree. Officers and firefighters located both girls with life-threatening injuries and began administering life-saving measures before they were taken to local hospitals. One of the teens later died, and the other remains in critical condition.

The names of the victims have not been released due to their ages, and police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash with support from the Denton County District Attorney’s Office. It was not immediately clear whether any citations or charges would be filed.

The Frisco Police Department and Frisco Fire Department responded to a call from an uninvolved party reporting the accident. In a news release, officials urged residents to exercise caution in icy conditions, noting that snow and ice can create slippery surfaces and lead to serious accidents.

Background
North Texas saw a winter storm system over the weekend that brought snow, ice and freezing temperatures to the region, making roads and outdoor surfaces hazardous. School districts across the Dallas-Fort Worth area reported closures due to the conditions, and local authorities have repeatedly warned residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities as frigid weather persists.
