At this time of year, we often see people asked the question, “What does Christmas mean to you?” But what about the actual objective meaning of Christmas?
According to a new survey, many believe it has been lost.
A poll conducted by Ipsos reveals that 75% of Americans believe that “most Americans have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas.”
In fact, 42% of respondents strongly agreed with that statement while just 6% strongly disagreed.
Among Christians, the belief is even stronger with 84% of those identifying as Christian in the poll believing that Americans have forgotten what the season is all about.
In fact, 50% of Christians selected “strongly agree.”
Incredibly, the belief is even stronger among those identifying as “Republicans” than those who said they were Christian. 88% of Republicans agreed that Americans have forgotten the meaning of Christmas with 52% “strongly agreeing,” the largest total in both categories.
As for Democrats, 66% believe the meaning of the holiday has been lost.
And while the numbers aren’t as overwhelming among non-religious Americans, it’s still easily a majority belief with 60% agreeing with the statement.
Ipsos conducted the study from December 9-11 and polled 1.023 adults.
