A 7-year-old boy from Parker County, Texas was attacked by his neighbors' dog while walking home from the bus stop, but was luckily saved by a neighbor and is now recovering at home.
Like plenty of kids, Conner Landers, 7, walks the short distance home from his bus stop to his house every afternoon. On Jan. 21, he was attacked by his neighbors' dog on the walk home.
"[The dog] Tore up his jacket and his backpack," Cassandra Ware, Landers' mother, said. "He was wearing a white T-shirt that was completely drenched in blood."
Luckily, next door neighbor Lorena Parker was outside and saw the dog standing over Landers. Realizing that the dog was "shaking him," she grabbed a stick to get the dog off of the young boy.
"I caught him and started beating on the dog. And then (the dog) drug (Landers) all the way (down the street)," Parker said.
Parker was able to fight off the dog and pull the 7-year-old to safety.
The Parker County Sheriff’s Office said that the dog "escaped his fenced yard and attacked Conner for unknown reasons." The dog is believed to be a "brown and black brindle boxer/bullmastiff mixed-breed."
Patti Jean Bell-Neveling, 49, was identified as the dog owner and was arrested on Monday for a third-degree felony charge of attack by dog resulting in serious bodily injury warrant.
“The fenced enclosure was inadequate. The dogs had gotten out before. The homeowner knew or should have known the fence was inadequate and made steps to try to rectify that. And that was not done,” said Parker County Sheriff Russ Authier.
The nonprofit Servolution Network, The Home Depot, Trinity River Fence & Construction, and other agencies all decided to chip in and help build a fence around the Landers' backyard on Saturday to help Conner feel more safe.
