Last week, a man allegedly stabbed a 71-year-old United States Post Office worker to death in Oakland, Calif.
By Thursday, the Oakland Police Department had announced the arrest of Wilbert Winchester, who is also the suspect in an attempted homicide reported last week. Authorities said Winchester is “being investigated in connection to several other violent assaults throughout Oakland.”
An ABC 7 report cites the district attorney saying that Winchester previously served three years for elder abuse.
“Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Winchester with murder and attempted murder,” Said the Oakland Police Department.
According to information available through Alameda County, a 28-year-old Wilbert Winchester was arrested around 2:45 a.m. last Wednesday and he faces several charges, including murder. A plea hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Feb. 3.
“Due to the diligent and combined efforts of OPD Officers and Homicide Investigators, Winchester was safely taken into custody,” said Oakland police.
Just before 1 a.m. Jan. 9, Oakland police responded to a reported knife assault at the 3400 block of International Boulevard. There they found 71-year-old Dilma Franks-Spruill suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Per the ABC 7 report, her son Miles Spruill said his mother’s throat was slit just three houses away from their home. Franks-Spruill, a Brazilian immigrant, had worked for USPS for 18 years, said the outlet.
“My mom was a tough cookie, let me tell you! She was 5’2” packed a punch, didn’t take no mess – my best friend,” her son said.
Just days later, law enforcement responded to another incident now linked to Winchester. According to the Oakland police, officers responded to the 1500 block of 8th Street at 12:30 a.m. Jan. 11. There they found another female victim suffering from multiple stab wounds.
“Medical professionals responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased,” said police.
