Apartment fire that killed two in August 2023 determined to be arson

Fire investigators now say that a fire that killed two people last summer in Minneapolis was an act of arson, launching an investigation into who could be behind it.

Assistant Chief Melanie Rucker says there were witnesses at the time who reported seeing someone set the fire on Aug. 13, 2023, at the four-story apartment complex in the city.

Since then, investigators have been looking for clues as to how it was set and who could have set it.

Rucker says the fire was very chaotic, with people hanging out of windows to be rescued.

“There was a roof collapse where fire crews had to do an immediate exit out of the building,” Rucker said.

After the fire, they were told people were missing, and later, they found two people dead in the rubble.

The investigation remains ongoing at this point.
