While Apple permits its corporate employees to use Slack for various topics unrelated to its regular business ventures, the tech company has barred its employees from dedicating a channel to discuss pay equity.

Apple’s human resources department said the topic of pay equity does not further its business interests or mission.

“Although this request is aligned with Apple’s commitment to pay equity, it doesn’t meet the requirement for Slack Terms of Use,” the company told employees. “Slack channels are provided to conduct Apple business & must advance the work, deliverables, or mission or Apple departments & teams.”

The company’s internal policy prohibits internal chatrooms “for activities and hobbies not recognized as Apple Employee clubs,” The Verge reported, noting that it has not been “evenly enforced.”

Currently, Apple Slack channels cover topics like pets (more than 8,000 members), video gaming (3,000 members), used goods for purchase, foosball, and dad jokes (around 2,000 members).

The discussion surrounding pay equity at Apple has not been welcomed with open arms. Employees who attempted to start surveys on the topic were told to remove them, The Verge said earlier this month.

The Cupertino-based company’s Gender Pay Gap Report for 2019 — required by law in the United Kingdom — revealed a 12% gap in salaries favoring men over women.

Apple did not respond to the outlet’s requests for comment.
