American Airlines is being sued by the liquor company Bacardi for not paying the tab on hundreds of cases of cognac that vanished from a flight last year, a lawsuit filed in federal court Tuesday said.
The cognac went missing on a flight from Paris and Los Angeles. Now Bacardi is demanding that the airline pay the $65,820 tab for the bottles, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Pasadena, California, NBC News reported.
The Florida-based liquor company says in its suit that 1,680 cases of the alcohol were put on a flight on Sept. 20, 2021. But when the flight arrived at its destination, 420 cases were missing, Dallas Morning News reported.
“While in the possession, custody and control of [American Airlines], six pallets and three cases were lost or stolen,” the lawsuit says.
Even though the suit did not allege that American Airlines was behind the liquor being lost or stolen, it has said that the airline has paid “no part” of the bill that Bacardi has “duly demanded.”
Bacardi and American Airlines did not respond to requests for comment from NBC News.
The type of cognac and how many bottles are unaccounted for have not been made clear by Bacardi.
