The end of an era is coming to Best Buy.
Starting in 2024, the electronics retailer will be phasing out the sale of physical movies -- DVDs and Blu-rays -- both in-store and online, the Associated Press reported.
The move comes as streaming services boom in popularity, making the need to own physical copies of movies and TV shows nearly obsolete for many people.
"To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago," the company said in a statement to the AP. "Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech for them to explore, discover and enjoy."
Shoppers will still be able to find racks of DVDs and Blu-rays through the 2023 holiday shopping season but after that, Best Buy will no longer be stocking the shelves at its more than 900 stores nationwide.
The retailer will continue to sell physical copies of video games, according to reports.
Best Buy's decision follows Netflix, which ended its DVD service in September after roughly a decade of offering rentals via mail.
The most recent data shows 83% of consumers in the United States currently use a subscription video-on-demand service, according to Statista.
