During a recent episode of the political podcast “Pod Save America,” it was shared that President Joe Biden’s internal polling showed that President-elect Trump could have won as many as “400 electoral votes” if the president was his opponent.
The new insight into the internal polling from President Biden’s team came from the show’s host, Jon Favreau, who noted that the point was touched on when the campaign shifted to Vice President Kamala Harris’s.
“Then we find out when the Biden campaign becomes the Harris campaign, that the Biden campaign’s own internal polling at the time when they were telling us he was the strongest candidate, showed that Donald Trump was going to win 400 electoral votes,” Favreau said.
Favreau worked with Biden in the Obama White House and was among the top voices calling for Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee over the summer. He shared that Biden’s reelection bid was a “catastrophic mistake,” with his “inner circle” refusing to believe he was “unpopular” to the American people.
“They refuse to acknowledge until very late that anyone could be upset about inflation. And they just kept telling us that his presidency was historic and it was the greatest economy ever,” Favreau said.
The remarks from Favreau come as Democrats continue to search for reasons behind Harris’s poor performance in the election, which saw Trump sweep every swing state.
According to an AP VoteCast study, more than half of voters who were “very concerned” about the increase in everyday items broke hard for Trump in the election. Those who said the economy was a top issue also sided with the former president.
