Want to deep-fry a turkey for Thanksgiving? Watch this demo video from the Chicago Fire Department first

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Fire Department on Tuesday demonstrated how not to deep-fry a turkey at the fire academy.

The demonstration is an annual seasonal reminder from the fire department that could save lives and property.

“When deep frying a turkey, it should always be done in an outdoor area. Never should it be done inside, not even in your garage,” Fire Commissioner Annette Nance Holt told WBBM Newsradio. “Remember that the oil and water just don’t mix. Water causes hot oil to react violently. You never put a frozen turkey into boiling oil.”

Then, firefighters did just that.

A turkey was dropped into an over-filled fryer, which boiled over and quickly sent flames 12-feet into the air.

“You see how quickly that went into flame,” District Chief Walter Schroeder said.

J.C. Fultz, who’s with the Office of the State Fire Marshal, said there are about 2,300 residential fires in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day, causing an average of five deaths, 25 injuries and $26 million in property damage.

“That’s big staggering numbers and a lot of this can be prevented by following simple safety steps,” Fultz said.

The fire department also recommended that children be kept away from deep fryers.
