If Kyle Rittenhouse avoids a lifelong prison sentence, then he might have a job with a Republican in Congress.

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz announced during his Wednesday night appearance on Newsmax that his office may offer Rittenhouse a job, pending his current homicide trial.

“Kyle Rittenhouse would probably make a pretty good congressional intern,” Gaetz said. “We may reach out to him and see if he’d be interested in helping the country in additional ways.”

Gaetz has shared that he believes Rittenhouse does not deserve a guilty verdict. He is one of several Republicans to come to the defense of the 18-year-old.

Former President Donald Trump was also among his supporters, sharing that Rittenhouse “probably would have been killed” if he didn’t discharge his weapon, NPR reported.

The jury in Rittenhouse’s trial has been in deliberations since closing arguments concluded on Monday. The trial has been in the national spotlight and is said to carry weight in future trials that claim self-defense.

On Aug. 25, 2020, Rittenhouse took to the streets of Kenosha carrying his AR-style rifle after protests broke out following the shooting of Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse fatally shot Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, while wounding Gaige Grosskreutz, who was 26 at the time. He claims he was defending himself, while others believe he was inciting violence.

“I defended myself,” Rittenhouse said when he spoke before the courtroom.
