A 45-year-old man from suburban Joliet, Ill., died in a tragic accident earlier this month while helping collect food donations for his 12-year-old daughter’s Girl Scout troop.
According to a GoFundMe page created by LaMore’s family to support his widow Erin and his daughter, Mia, the family was out to collect the donations on Nov. 6 when the accident occurred.
“Tragically, Aaron fell from his vehicle and fractured his skull,” said the fundraising page, which had received $51,698 in donations towards a $100,000 goal as of Tuesday. “As emergency personal arrived on scene, Aaron worked up the strength to pick himself off of the ground and walk into the ambulance.”
Ryan Talaga, LaMore’s brother-in-law, told Patch that the incident occurred before the family was able to collect donations.
“They didn’t even get to the first house, when he lost his footing, fell backwards out of the car onto the pavement, and struck his head on the back,” said his brother-in-law Ryan Talaga.
At first, LaMore seemed stunned and not badly injured. Talaga said that his brother-in-law was even standing shortly after the fall. He then grew increasingly agitated as he was taken from the scene for medical care.
After falling, LaMore was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox – where he lived with his family – for a CT scan. However, his condition was rapidly declining and doctors there sent him to the University of Chicago Hospital for specialized care. According to Patch, LaMore had multiple skull fractures.
“While waiting on transportation, Aaron went into cardiac arrest for four minutes,” said his family. “Immediately following, he was airlifted to the University of Chicago, and doctors did all they could.”
Less than a week later, LaMore died due to his injuries late on Veteran’s Day.
According to an obituary for LaMore, he was formerly of Manteno. He was veteran of the United States Army, worked as a tollway section supervisor and was with his wife for 16 years. LaMore was also an organ donor.
“The University of Chicago held a Hero’s Walk in his honor as he saved multiple lives that day with his donation,” said his family. “He will forever be a hero and champion.”
In addition to his wife and daughter, LaMore is survived by his mother, Mary, his parents-in-law, his wife’s siblings and their partners and other family members.
“He was very selfless,” Talaga told Patch. “Any time I needed something, he would help me, take the time to walk me through it… he would always give as much as he could.”
Donations to the GoFundMe will assist Erin with expenses, medical bills, and Mia’s future schooling. The family also asked for donations to A Gift of Hope organ and tissue donation network as well as The Wounded Warrior Project.
