Delta flight DL209 from Scotland to New York City was canceled at the last minute on Friday after the flight’s pilot allegedly showed up drunk and was arrested during the passenger boarding process.
The Herald Scotsman reported that the 61-year-old veteran pilot, who was not named, was arrested at the Edinburgh Airport.
Since his arrest, the pilot has been charged under the UK’s Railways and Transport Safety Act of 2003. The legislation imposes limits on alcohol consumption for crew members, which police are alleging the pilot surpassed.
The airline released a statement on the incident, confirming that one of its crew members was taken into custody on Friday morning.
“Delta is assisting the authorities with their ongoing inquiries. Delta’s EDI-JFK flight [June 16] has been canceled, and customers are being re-accommodated. We apologize to customers impacted by this cancellation,” a spokesperson added.
Delta released another statement to Insider on the incident, noting that the company’s “alcohol policy is among the strictest in the industry, and we have no tolerance for violation.”
The Herald reported that the pilot was scheduled to appear Monday at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
