While at the beginning of the summer, many thought there would be a flip in Congress with Republicans expected to regain control, the gap continues to shrink with Democrats gaining favor due to several key topics.

A new poll conducted by NBC News has found that the parties are tied when it comes to congressional preference among registered voters, as both have 46% of respondents supporting their party being in control.

Several factors have played a part in the resurgence of support for Democrats, most notably the 61% of voters who disapprove of the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the disapproval for Donald Trump plummeting, while President Joe Biden’s approval rating has risen.

However, not all is gloomy for Republicans as they still have advantages, with 63% of voters believing their income is falling behind the cost of living, coupled with 58% who do not think Joe Biden has adequately handled the economy.

Last month the same NBC News poll found a 2-point lead for Republicans, but the numbers have since closed. However, pollsters did note that the change is almost negligible as it is within the poll’s margin of error.

Still, the new poll found several factors for both Democrats and Republicans that could see either of them winning out in Congress and governor’s seats across the country.

For Democrats, the poll found that they have the support of 77% of Black voters, 57% of those ages 18-34, 58% of white voters with college degrees, 53% of women, and 46% of Latinos.

On the flip side, Republicans have the support of 8% of Black voters, 33% of those ages 18-34, 38% of white voters with college degrees, 40% of women, and 42% of Latinos.

But Republicans do hold the lead in several other areas, as 53% of men support the GOP, while 39% support Democrats, 54% of white voters, compared to 41% supporting Democrats, 43% of independents, compared to 37% supporting Democrats, and 64% of white voters without college degrees, while 31% support Democrats.

Republicans still lead in enthusiasm around voting in the upcoming election, with 69% of conservatives saying they have a high level of interest versus 66% of Democrats.

Biden’s overall job performance has raised his approval rating, with 45% of registered voters supporting his job, which pollsters have said is a key to Democrats gaining support. The number is also his highest approval rating since last October.

Paired with Biden’s improving approval rating is the favorability of Trump hitting its lowest numbers of his time post-presidency.

The poll found that only 34% have a favorable view of the former president, while 54% have a negative view of him. Trump’s previous low was 32% in April 2021, just months after he departed from the White House and the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots.

With midterm elections right around the corner, time will only tell who will control the House and Senate come next year.
