A man who was caught red-handed robbing a couple's home in New Mexico was so embarrassed, he left behind $200 as an apology before taking off.

According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, the couple returned from a night out on Sunday to find a man in their home.

The intruder had apparently taken a nap, bathed, ate some food and drank beer before the homeowners walked in on him, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

Although the man had an AR-15 rifle with him, he didn't use it to threaten the couple, police said. He simply apologized, dropped the cash -- to pay for a window he'd broken to get inside -- and left.

The intruder told the couple he was running from someone after his family was killed in Texas, according to the newspaper, and that his car broke down 100 miles outside of town. He was extremely embarrassed and apologetic about the situation, one of the homeowners told police.

Police responded to the area but could not locate the man. On Monday, deputies were on patrol when they stopped a man who matched the suspect's description. Deputies detained the man, identified as 34-year-old Teral Christesson, and he confessed to the burglary, according to police.

Christesson was booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility on charges of aggravated burglary, criminal damage to property, and larceny.
