An employee at a Phoenix Family Dollar retail store has been arrested and charged after he pulled a firearm on an alleged shoplifter and shot him 10 times last week.

A police report states that the man who 24-year-old Kevin Salas Madrid opened fire on was allegedly a serial shoplifter. Moments before he started shooting, Madrid reportedly had a confrontation with the shoplifter, KTVK reported.

The confrontation saw the alleged shoplifter punch Madrid in the face after the shopkeeper told him to leave the store. Police shared that witnesses then saw Madrid open fire, shooting the man 10 times in response.

Court documents obtained by Fox10 claim Madrid continued to shoot the man, despite him being on the ground and unresponsive.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he is still listed in life-threatening condition.

“Kevin stated he had made the worst decision of his life,” police wrote in his probable cause statement obtained by Fox10. “Kevin explained he was struck and decided to shoot but looking back, he realized it was egregious.”

After his arrest, the store clerk was charged with attempted second-degree murder.
