Video released this week from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department showed a vehicle that hit the median on Las Vegas Boulevard start smoking before it caught fire. While the car began smoking profusely, the driver wasn’t exiting the car, so strangers stepped in to help.
The video from the police shows Justin Mouser saving the driver of the BMW after witnessing the crash while he was walking down the Vegas strip. Mouser spoke with FOX5 about what he saw, saying he thought “somebody needs to look in to see what’s wrong with him.”
Mouser told the station that he and others who saw the wreck worked to open the doors and get the driver out as the car was smoking badly.
“The guys across the street were hollering that it was still on fire,” Mouser said. “So, I kind of stepped around the door, looked under the car, and thought man that looks like it may be spreading a little. It might be time to pick up the pace.”
After fighting with opening the door, the footage shows Mouser and an officer with the department dragging a limp body out of the driver’s seat just as the whole car engulfed in flames.
Even though officers had instructed the crowd to step away from the car, Mouser told FOX5 that he continued his attempts to get the man out of the car, even with the risk.
“I don’t hear very well or sometimes act like I don’t,” Mouser told the station. “I probably should have listened to him, but I tried to help.”
Mouser, a barber from Kentucky, returned home on Monday with a story to tell, as many have called him a hero despite his refusing to take credit for saving the man’s life.
“Well, I think the officer would have got him regardless,” Mouser said. “I’m glad the guy’s going to be ok.”
As for the driver of the vehicle, Alexander Dawkins, county records show that he is facing multiple charges, including a DUI 1st offense, failure to maintain travel lane, and failure to show proof of insurance, KSNV reported.
Officers arrested Dawkins at the local hospital, where he was taken for treatment after the accident. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 24.
