An investigation is underway after a woman who has been in custody since 2022 became pregnant at a Florida jail.
Daisy Link, 28, has been awaiting trial at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami on a charge of second-degree murder since June 2022, jail records show. She's also charged with battery by a detainee on a visitor or other detainee.
On Christmas Day, Link shocked her family when she told them over the phone that she was pregnant.
"We don't know what's going to happen to her. But we do know is Daisy should not be four months pregnant in that TGK jail," Crystal Barreto, Link's sister, told CBS News.
It was initially rumored that Link was impregnated through an air conditioning vent. A tipster reportedly told WPLG that Link had gotten pregnant by another inmate who is housed on the floor above her.
"According to the tipster, the male inmate ejaculated in a glove and somehow managed to send it down through an air conditioning vent to the floor where Link is, and that's how she got pregnant, WPLG reported.
The tipster added that Link and the male inmate have never seen each other but speak to one another through the air vent.
Barreto, however, doesn't believe that. She thinks her sister was sexually assaulted behind bars. Link hasn't told her family exactly what happened because her phone calls are being recorded and she's terrified, Barreto said.
"They never tried to give my sister a rape treatment. They never tried to see what really happened to her," Barreto told CBS News. "[She's] in fear of her life. In fear that they're going to send in some girls to beat her up. And make her purposely have a miscarriage. She also says they are trying to mentally break her down in there."
A spokesperson for Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed to multiple outlets that Link told staff on Dec. 23 that she may be pregnant, and the pregnancy was confirmed during a medical exam.
"The care, safety, and rehabilitation of all those in our custody remains our top priority," the spokesperson said in a statement. "While there is no evidence of sexual battery against our inmate at this time, the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy are currently under active investigation."
Marlene Montaner, Link's criminal defense attorney, told NBC News that she's trying to get Link released on house arrest, especially now that she's pregnant. Montaner blames corrections officials for the situation.
"No matter how you slice this for them, at the end, they are at fault for her pregnancy," she said.
