A new poll shows the race between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden couldn't be any closer.
According to a USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll released Monday, six months before Election Day, Trump and Biden are tied 37% to 37%.
While 75% of voters say their mind is firmly made up, 1 in 4 voters (24%) say it's possible they could change their mind before the election and another 12% say they haven't made a choice yet.
"When we think about the race tied with just 26 weeks to go, we have to consider that people tune out politics and the party conventions in July and August," David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, told USA Today. "That leaves just 17 weeks for candidates to actively campaign, and it's actually 13 or 14 weeks when you consider states where early voting starts weeks before Election Day."
"We're basically at the doorstep of the election, and the outcome is a coin flip," Paleologos added.
Polling data shows Biden has been gaining ground since the beginning of the year. In the USA TODAY/Suffolk Poll taken in January, Biden was 3 points behind Trump -- 34% to 37% -- and in March, he trailed by 2 points, at 38% to 40%.
USA Today says there has been a shift among some key voter groups since January:
• Among voters under 35 years-old, Biden has gained 1 percentage point while Trump has lost 12. Biden leads 34% to 25%.
• Among Hispanic voters, Biden's support hasn't changed but Trump has lost 11 points. Biden leads 34% to 28%.
• Among independent voters, Biden has gained 5 points, and Trump has lost 4. Still, Trump holds a slight lead with 27% to 26%.
• Among Black voters, Biden has gained 7 points while Trump's support hasn't changed. Biden leads 64% to 12%.
The poll also shows that a majority of voters (69%) believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, while fewer than 1 in 4 (23%) think it's on the right track.
