While much remains to be seen with President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to merge Canada with the U.S., some talking heads on FOX News appear to be endorsing the idea.
Fox News host Jesse Watters is the latest to discuss the Canada-US merger that Trump continues to float. Many say it's a negotiating tactic for tariffs and trade deals, while others are taking his musing at face value.
Ontario Premier Doug Four criticized Trump’s idea while appearing on Watters’ show.
“You say that Americans don’t have a problem with Canadians, and we don’t, but it seems like you have a problem with us. Because if I were a citizen of another country and I was a neighbor of the United States, I would consider it a privilege to be taken over by the United States of America,” Watters told Ford during his appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime.”
The Fox News host went on to say that it’s “what everybody else in the world wants: American citizenship.”
“For some reason, that’s repellant to you Canadians, and I find that personally offensive, premier,” Watters said.
Ford replied to Watters, saying that the best way to move forward was through the countries staying independent but working together.
“Well, you know something, Jesse …. We’re proud Canadians just like there’s proud Americans, and if we join together and take on the world with a great trade deal between us, I think that’d be fabulous … No one can stop us,” Ford shot back.
Trump shared earlier this week that he might decide to use “economic force” to annex Canada while also floating the idea of taking back the Panama Canal and acquiring Greenland.
While his supporters, and some close to him, have continued to promote the idea, many have criticized Trump for his comments and even questioned whether they are just a smoke show.
In fact, Ford took a shot at Trump’s idea earlier this week during a press conference, saying that his country was not for sale. However, Ford threw out a counteroffer to the president-elect to showcase how absurd he thought Trump’s remarks were.
“To the president, I’ll make him a counteroffer. How about if we buy Alaska? And we’ll throw in Minnesota and Minneapolis at the same time?” Ford said. “You know, it’s not realistic.”
