With the threat of a 2020 rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump seeming more likely every day, a new poll has found Democrats would be open to a challenger of their presumed candidate.
The new Yahoo News/YouGov poll found that 54% of Democrats would like to see someone challenge Biden in the party’s primary.
Another 28% said they did not want Biden to be challenged, and 18% said they were unsure whether they wanted a challenger or not.
Younger voters were more likely to say they wanted a Democrat challenge, with nearly 70% of those ages 18-29 supporting someone going up against Biden, compared to 61% of those ages 30-44.
Older generations were less likely to want to see someone take on the president for the Democratic nominee, with roughly 50% of respondents ages 49-64 wanting a challenger and 43% of those 65 and older.
But, while a majority of Democrats want another voice to step up, the poll found that Biden is still miles ahead of those who have offered him a fight for the nominee.
The poll found that 64% of respondents would vote for Biden in the Democratic primary, a comfortable lead over author Marianne Williamson and Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), who received 4% in the poll.
Additionally, 26% reported being unsure, and 2% said they would not vote if those were the options.
When asked about Biden, 38% of Democrats said they were very or somewhat concerned about his health and mental abilities. Another 73% said they were worried about his age and fitness.
The poll comes as Biden is set to turn 81 next week and as recent polling shows former President Trump leading him in crucial battleground states, which could swing the election in a potential rematch.
In the Yahoo News/YouGov poll, Trump held a small lead, with 44% selecting him in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup and only 42% selecting Biden. Nine percent said they were unsure, and 5% said they weren’t going to vote.
The poll was conducted between Nov. 9-13 and included responses from 1,584 adults. There is a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
