A young military veteran who was shot in the head while preaching in Arizona last week managed to survive the hit, but was in critical condition, according to authorities.
They’re now looking for suspects in the case.
Hans Schmidt, 26, is the outreach director at Victory Chapel, a Pentecostal church in Glendale, Ariz., according to the Arizona Republic. He also served as a military combat medic and is a father to two children, per the Glendale Police Department.
At Victory Chapel, services typically draw about 100 attendees.
“Please continue praying for Hans and his family we are believing God for a miracle!” said a Monday social media post from the church. There is also an option to donate to Schmidt’s family on the church website.
Police said that Schmidt was “standing on the northwest corner of the 51-hundred block of W. Peoria Ave where he was preaching to the public about attending a nearby church service,” at approximately 6:15 p.m. Nov. 15 when she sustained a gunshot wound. It was a result of a projectile, the department said.
“He is presently in critical condition,” police said Nov. 17. According to the Arizona Republic, he was intubated after having a seizure and had fluid drained from his brain.
Detectives are investigating the incident and believe additional witnesses might be able to provide information.
“We are asking for the public’s help in identifying anyone involved. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3000 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO,” said police.
