A Georgia man who once spent 16 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit was killed during a traffic stop on Monday.

Allan Cure, 53, was pulled over for speeding and reckless driving in Camden County, in southeastern Georgia, and got out of his car at the deputy's request, but then things took a violent turn, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations.

"Cure complied with the officer's commands until learning that he was under arrest," the bureau said in a statement. "After not complying with the deputy's requests, the deputy tased Cure."

Investigators say Cure then assaulted the deputy.

"The deputy used the Taser for a second time and an ASP baton; however, Cure still did not comply," the bureau said. "The deputy pulled out his gun and shot Cure."

First responders treated Cure, but he later died.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

The sheriff's office said Cure was driving recklessly and "speeding over 100 mph" before he was stopped by the deputy. According to CNN, Cure was heading to his home in Fairburn, Georgia after visiting his mother when he was stopped.

In 2003, Cure was sentenced to life in prison after an armed robbery in Florida.  He was exonerated and released in 2020 with help from The Innocence Project. The group's executive director said he was devastated by news of the Cure's death.

"I can only imagine what it’s like to know your son is innocent and watch him be sentenced to life in prison, to be exonerated and ... then be told that once he's been freed, he’s been shot dead," Seth Miller told the Associated Press.

Cure had received an $817,000 settlement from the state of Florida in August.

The Camden County Sheriff's Office said it would release dash camera and body camera videos of the shooting on Wednesday afternoon "in an effort to be completely transparent as to what happened, and how the incident escalated to the point of extreme Use of Force."
