The new commissioner of community safety for Minneapolis is now officially on the job after his ceremonial swearing-in this morning.

Toddrick Barnette, who has served as the Hennepin County chief judge since 2020, was selected by Mayor Jacob Frey to oversee the city’s five community safety departments.

Barnette got emotional during today’s ceremony at city hall, with many members of his family in the audience. He spoke highly of his Uncle Tyrone, who helped raise him.

“I’m just completely overwhelmed by the support here — seeing all the people that really impacted my life,” Barnette said, choking back tears.

Barnette takes over after Cedric Alexander, who left the post after less than a year of service.
