A mother from Polk County, Georgia unexpectedly celebrated her first Mother's Day this past weekend, after her daughter was born nearly fourth months early, according to CBS 46 in Atlanta.
Kayla Weiss told the news station that after a routine visit to the doctor's office, she was forced to move up her due date immediately.
Doctors determined she had preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication caused by high blood pressure that can lead to serious or fatal complications for both the mother and baby, according to the Mayo Clinic.
"I went to the doctor and it was a regular visit and my blood pressure was 190 over 110, and they're like you’re close to having a seizure, you need to go to the hospital," Weiss said.
Weiss said that her original due date was August 8, far off from her daughter's actual birthday. She gave birth to Paisley Scott Hopkins on April 23, as the baby weighed just 14 ounces and was only 9 inches long.
Weiss and her fiancé, Austyn Hopkins, found out they were pregnant with their first child in December. At the time, they were not even planning to have a child yet, as Hopkins called it "surprising."
Paisley Scott Hopkins has remained in the NICU in Chattanooga, TN, and now weighs over a pound.
Weiss added that she had somewhat planned to celebrate Mother's Day as an expecting mother, but instead, her family decided to come to the hospital and spend the day with them there.
"It's just crazy to me because four weeks ago I was thinking, 'Okay, technically would I be celebrating Mother's Day?' even though she wasn't born, and now she's born and I'm a mother," Weiss said.
The couple agreed that they will be filled with emotion when they are finally able to hold their baby, but for now, they are enjoying just touching her through the incubator.
"She's in a little box where you're able to stick your hands into just to touch her," Hopkins said.
There has been over $1,500 donated to the young family so far through a GoFundMe page that aims to help cover the costs of medical expenses, food, travel and more.
